Müzik ve TV tarihinde ilk sayılacak konseri öncesinde sıkı bir diyete giren Elvis, verdiği kilolarla daha formda bir görünüme kavuşmuştu. 9 Ocak’ta helikopter ile geldiği Hawaii’de büyük ve coşkulu bir kalabalık tarafından karşılanan Kral, ertesi gün provalara başladı.


12 OCAK KONSERİ

Elvis, canlı gösteriden iki gün önce bir prova şovu gerçekleştirdi. Bu konser de seyircili olarak yapıldı ve TV çekimi gerçekleştirildi. Hawaii konseri için Elvis’e bugün herkes tarafından çok iyi bilinen ‘American Eagle’ kostümü hazırlandı. Kral, orkestrası ve vokal grubu iki gün sonraki şova iyi bir hazırlık performansı gösterdiler. Şovun repertuarı her zamanki gösterilerden farklı hazırlanmış ve yeni şarkılara ağırlık verilmişti. ‘Also Sprach Zarathustra’ ile sahneye giren ve şovu ‘See See Rider’ ile açan Elvis, bir önceki yıla ait ‘Burning Love’ın yorumunda ise sözleri karıştırdı. Şarkı sonrasında gülerek, ‘İyi akşamlar bayanlar baylar, şarkının tüm sözlerini unuttum’ dedi. Bu şov genel manasında son derece başarılı geçti. Asıl konser öncesinde gerek teknik ekip, gerekse Elvis çok iyi bir sınav verdiler. Kral daha önce hiç sahnede söylemediği şarkıları da seslendirdi. Seyircinin reaksiyonu ise kusursuzdu.


14 OCAK KONSERİ

40 ülkeden 1.5 milyarı aşkın seyircinin TV başından izlediği şov, NBC tarafından yayınlandı. Konserde iki gün öncesine göre üç ekstra şarkı yer aldı. Bu aynı zamanda Elvis’in 1968’den bu yana çıktığı ilk televizyon programıydı. Şovda ‘American Eagle’ kostümü ve makyajı ile çok yakışıklı ve karizmatik görünen Elvis Presley, şarkılarını kusursuz biçimde yorumladı. NBC kameraları farklı çekim açıları ve bölünen ekran tekniği ile konseri dünyaya yayınladı.
